United Nation Permanent Forum on Indignous Issues 12th Session

New York City, NY

May 20-31, 2013

The United Nations Permanent Forum on indigenous Issues (UNPFII) is a consultative body to the Economic and Social Council (EcoSoc). It submits recommendations through EcoSoc for implementation by the States who constitute the membership of the UN system. Every year, Indigenous Peoples also attend and present testimony, evidence, and recommendations in defense of our human rights, the right of self determination as Peoples equal to all other Peoples, and in exercise of our collective responsibilities as Nations of Indigenous Peoples in defense of Mother Earth.

In 2012, the UNPFII called for states to address the impact of the doctrine of discovery in terms of educational curricula and public instruction. the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Conference serves as a local-regional, continental-global strategy that implemented this recommendation on April 19-20, 2013 in Phoenix, Arizona. The Declaration of Abya Yala which resulted from this convening was submitted and officialized at this session.
